All educational institutions in Malaysia registered under the Education Ministry will be reopening according to the 2021 academic calendar, says the ministry in a statement January 2.

This comes as even Covid-19 cases continue to climb in the country with 2,295 new cases recorded on the same day compared to 2,068 the previous day, bringing the total number of cases to 117,373.

An earlier circular issued back on Aug 14 last year by the ministry said that schools in states under Category A would be reopening on January 20 and end on Dec 9 while states under category B would reopen schools on January 20 and close on December 10.

So if the government sticks to its latest announcement, all educational institutions in Malaysia are set to resume classes on January 20.

As per the statement, private and international institutions that fall under the ministry will reopen according to their respective academic calendars, adding even those in conditional movement control order areas will also need to follow suit.

At the same time, guidelines and SOPs set by the authorities and strong monitoring by concerned agencies including the Education Ministry will be in place to curb the spread of the virus and maintain hygiene norms.
