The Minister of Education in Brazil, the second worst hit country in the world by the novel coronavirus, Milton Ribeiro has tested positive for Covid-19. The minister revealed this in a tweet on July 20.

This is the latest high profile case in the country where several government figures including the President tested positive for the virus.

In the tweet, the education minister Ribeiro wrote, ‘I’ve just received a positive Covid-19 result this morning. I am already medicated, and I’ll work remotely.’

Just hours earlier in the day, Brazil’s Minister of Citizenship Onyx Lorenzoni posted a tweet that he tested positive for Covid-19, adding he began showing symptoms on July 17.

Earlier this month, the country’s President Jair Bolsonaro tested positive for Covid-19, following months of downplaying the virus.

Three other high voltage government officials have also previously tested positive in Brazil. Back in March, Mines and Energy Minister Bento Albuquerque, and Institutional Security Minister General Augusto Heleno tested positive, along with Bolsonaro’s communication secretary Fabio Wajngarten and another 15 members of the Brazilian delegation upon return from a trip to the United States for meetings between Brazilian President and its US counterpart.

According to Worldometer, Brazil now has at least 2.1 million coronavirus cases including over 79,533 deaths to date.
