Miss Universe 2020 Mexico’s Andrea Meza

Miss Mexico Andrea Meza has been named the winner of Miss Universe 2020 at its 69th annual pageant, becoming the third Mexican to have won this title, reports CNN.

The 69th Miss Universe competition was held on May 16, 2021 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida, USA. The pageant, expected to be held last year, was put on hold due to the covid-19 pandemic.

Meza, a model and make-up Artist, has won the crown beating 73 other women. Miss Universe 2019 Zozibini Tunzi, the first Black woman from South Africa to have won the crown, has placed the crown on Meza’s head amid huge applause at the event.

Besides, at the gala event, Miss Brazil Julia Gama has been announced as first runner-up and Miss Peru Janick Maceta Del Castillo, the second runner-up.

Upon bagging the crown, Andrea Meza said in her reaction, ‘I am so honored to have been selected among the 73 other amazing women I stood with tonight’, adding ‘it is a dream come true to wear the Miss Universe crown, and I hope to serve the world through my advocacy for equality in the year to come and beyond.’

According to Miss Universe Organization press statement, Meza, who is from Chihuahua City, is a model and make-up artist and has a degree in software engineering.

The 69th Miss Universe winner is also an activist, and works closely with the Municipal Institute for Women, which aims to end gender-based violence, added the statement.
