Bangladesh, one of the worst hit countries in South Asia, has recorded 55 more deaths, second highest single day jump in fatalities, in the last 24 hours till July 5. That takes the death toll in the country to 2,052 since the outbreak began in the country. Over the period, the country has logged 2,738 more cases of infection, raising the cases in total to 162,417.
Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in the country said at the daily online health bulletin on the corona situation in the country. Bangladesh recorded its first corona cases on March 8 and the first death on 18th of the month.
In South Asia, both in terms of cases and deaths from the novel coronavirus, Bangladesh stands at third position after India and Pakistan. In the region, India has the highest number of cases and deaths with at least 673k cases and over 19k fatalities respectively. Pakistan has over 228k confirmed cases and more than 4k fatalities.
In Bangladesh, the highest single day jump in deaths so far now is 64 which was registered on June 30.

DGHS said at the briefing that 13,988 samples were examined at about 70 labs across the country over the period to ascertain new case. Of them, 2,738 samples have turned to be positive for the virus, down from the earlier period at 3,288 from 14,727 samples. The rate of infections based on the examination of samples over the period is 19.57%. Overall the rate is about 19.20% in terms of samples examined in total. The country has so far examined 846,62 samples since the outbreak began in the country.
During the bulletin, the health body also said that 1,904 more patients had recovered in the last 24 hours, raising the recovered to 72,625 so far now. The rate of the recovery is 44.72%.
In Bangladesh, male is accounting for a significant majority of the deaths as of the new fatalities over the last 24 hours, 37 belong to that sex. Of the total deaths from the virus, 1,624 are male and 428 female. And regarding concentration of cases and deaths, central Dhaka division makes up the most as of the new fatalities, 19 are registered in Dhaka division.
Internationally the novel coronavirus has infected more than 11.2 million people including at least 528k deaths. Of all the countries affected by the virus, the USA is the worst hit with at least least 2,839,436 infections including at least 129,676 related fatalities, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
