Corona Outbreak : Death Toll Continues Rising In Bangladesh

The death toll from the novel coronavirus in Bangladesh has been on the rise constantly as the country has recorded 21 more victims within 24 hours ending May 26 afternoon. That raises the national total toll to 522. Moreover, there have been 1,166 new cases of infections over the period, bringing the total cases to 36,751.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in Bangladesh said at the regular bulletin online on the coronavirus situation in the country on May 26 Afternoon, just one day after the Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the biggest religious celebrations in the Muslim world.

The country confirmed its first coronavirus case on March 8 and the first death 18th of the month. Since then the both fatalities and cases have been climbing non-stop despite the whole country being under relaxed lockdowns from March 26.

DGHS said at the bulletin that 5,407 samples were examined at about 40 labs across the country over the period. Of those, 1,166 samples came positive for the virus, down from the earlier period at 1,975 cases.
The bulletin also said that 245 more patients have recovered from the disease over the period, taking the number of the recovered in total to 7,579.

To contain the spread of the virus, officially known as Covid-19, the country has been under lockdown from March 26. Given the worsening situation, the government on May 13 extended the lockdown to the 30th of the month. This is the 7th extension to the shutdowns.

The government has already declared the entire nation as virus prone as the virus has spread to all 64 districts in the country. Almost all the districts are under lockdowns with the capital city Dhaka being worst affected both in terms of cases and deaths.

Internationally the covid-19 coronavirus has infected more than 5.4 million people including over 346,000 deaths. Of all the affected countries or territories, the USA is the worst hit with at least 1,662,768 recorded cases and at least 98,223.
