Bangladesh, one of the worst hit countries by the novel coronavirus in South Asia, has logged 21 fresh deaths from the virus in the last 24 hours till August 1 afternoon. That takes the total toll in the country to 3,132.
Over the period, the country has seen further 2,199 positive cases against 8,802 samples examined across the country. With that, there are now at least 239,860 cases of infections in the country since the first case was reported back on March 8.
Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) in the country said at the daily online health bulletin on the coronavirus situation in the country.
Bangladesh logged its first death from the virus on March 18. The country, third highest in the region in terms of both cases and deaths, recorded its highest single day count in deaths of 64 on June 30.
The rate of Deaths in the country now is 1.31% compared with the confirmed infections so far. The country has tested 11,85,611 samples so far since the outbreak started.
During the bulletin, the health body also said that 1,117 more patients had recovered in the last 24 hours. That brings the recovered in total to 136,253 to date. The rate of the recovery is now 56.86%.
The percentage of identification of new cases against the samples examined over the period is 24.98. The positivity rate in the country now is 20.23%.
In Bangladesh, male is accounting for a significant majority of the deaths. Of the new fatalities over the last 24 hours, 16 are men. Of the total fatalities, 2,662 account for male and the remaining 670 female. In terms of percentage of deaths, 78.61 represents male and the rest 21.39 female.

Of other countries in South Asia, the number of cases in India has crossed 1.5 million mark as the country now has 1,695,988 cases and 36,511 deaths so far. The country, second most populous nation in the world, logged 57,118 new infections and at least 764 fresh deaths in the last 24 hours till August 1 morning local time, as per the country’s health ministry.
More than 10.94 lakh patients have recovered in India, the recovery rate stood at 64.52 percent till the date. India has tested a total of 1,93,58,659 samples so far. The positivity rate stands now at 8.57 percent.
The country now has the third highest number of cases and fifth highest deaths in the world, just behind USA and Brazil with more than 4.5 million and at least 2.67 million cases respectively. The virus has claimed at least 92,568 lives in Brazil, the second highest in the world.
Pakistan, another country in South Asia hit hard by the virus, has 278,914 confirmed cases with at least 5,968 deaths, as per Dawn online, a local media outlet. In the country, at least 247,878 patients have recovered now.
Internationally the novel coronavirus has infected more than 17.6 million people with at least 679k deaths. Of all the countries affected by the virus, the USA is the worst hit with at least 4,562,038 cases including 153,314 fatalities, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.
In other words, the death toll in the USA is a quarter of the global total of at least 679k. The United States reported 67,023 new coronavirus cases and 1,259 new deaths on July 31 local time, according to Johns Hopkins University.
