At least 27 state authorities in the USA have cancelled all in-person academic activities till the rest of the academic year with Hawaii being the latest to announce school closures as part of measures to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus. The cancellation of all physical classes in Hawaii came the same day President Donald Trump’s suggestions of reopening school activities sooner across the country. In the USA, school academic year lasts from September to May.
School facilities In Hawaii have been closed statewide since March 19. With the decision of cancelling all physical classes, the state instead is now moving to distance learning.
In a statement on April 17, Superintendent Dr. Christina Kishimoto said, ‘this pandemic has undoubtedly changed the way that education will be delivered at all levels and especially how our Department will operate moving forward.’ Although the order expires with the end of the school year on May 28, the Department of Education says summer school is also likely to be delivered via distance learning this year.
On the same day, officials in Iowa, Illinois, Hawaii, Maryland and Texas all announced school closures for the rest of the academic year.
